Raising a Glass to Greatness: The Britannia Inn, Llanmadoc 🍻
Celebrating Martin & Lindsey’s Triumph at the Best Pub in Wales
In June this year, cheers rang out across the Gower Peninsula as Martin and Lindsey, custodians of the historic Britannia Inn in Llanmadoc, were crowned Best Pub in Wales at the 2025 National Pub & Bar Awards.
This prestigious accolade comes from a competition that reviews more than 800 venues nationwide, judging them on service, atmosphere, food, drink, and community spirit. And the Britannia came out on top.
Before taking on the Britannia, Martin and Lindsey had already built stellar reputations as high-end chefs in some of the UK’s most acclaimed kitchens—experience that now anchors the pub’s award-winning menu.
A Win Steeped in History 🏰
Tucked beneath the heather-clad slopes of Llanmadoc Hill, the Britannia Inn dates back to the late 17th century. Its oak beams are reputedly salvaged from shipwrecks that once dotted the nearby coast.
It’s the village’s last surviving tavern, lovingly preserved and now thriving under the stewardship of Martin and Lindsey.
What Makes the Britannia Shine?
- Local Flavour – Seasonal menus spotlight Gower lamb, Burry Inlet cockles & laverbread, and vegetables from neighbouring smallholdings.
- Real-Ale Mastery – Rotating hand-pulls feature popular real ales, kept in pristine condition thanks to Martin’s meticulous cellar work.
- A Room with a View – The sun-trapping terrace offers sweeping views across Whiteford Sands and the Loughor Estuary—an unbeatable post-walk pint spot.
- Community Heartbeat – A welcoming hub for locals, walkers, and beach-goers alike—the perfect refreshment stop after a ramble.
Meet the Winning Duo đź‘«
Martin and Lindsey both built careers in high-end hotel kitchens, working both in the UK and internationally before bringing their culinary talents to Llanmadoc.
Today, Martin leads the kitchen as Head Chef, while Lindsey heads up the front-of-house team, ensuring that every guest feels like family.
- Refreshing the cellar – So every cask and keg pours flawlessly.
- Elevating the kitchen – With a concise menu of classics (think Gower rarebit) alongside inventive specials like salt-marsh lamb croquettes.
- Championing local produce – Featuring ingredients like Gower Salt Marsh Lamb and Selwyn's cockles & laverbread.
Their Secret Sauce
Years spent working in award-winning restaurants and five-star hotels across Australia, New Zealand, and multiple continents have given Martin and Lindsey a unique perspective.
Their global experience allows them to layer international culinary techniques onto the local Gower larder. This fusion of world-class training and hyper-local sourcing is what truly sets a Britannia plate apart.
Why This Win Matters for Gower & Beyond
Earning the title of Wales’ top pub is more than just a personal victory—it shines a spotlight on the entire Gower food and drink scene.
Visitors drawn to the Britannia often stay to explore the peninsula’s beaches, farm shops, and walking trails, supporting local livelihoods year-round—not just in the peak summer months.
